Happy Hispanic Heritage Month!!

Hello again, I hope you all had a wonderful week and that at least ac ouple of you attended some of the many events both on and off campus.
This week marks the start of Hispanic Heritage Month in the US, an especially important celebration given our University's large Latin@ population. The US has a long, complicated, and fascinating history with Latin America and one that I hope everyone takes the time to understand as inhabitants of the borderlands.
As you may be aware, this weekend was the celebration of Mexico, and Central America's independence from Spain. As we celebrate our release from the yoke of the Spanish empire we must remember that many of our Indigenous brethren both inside and outside of Latin America have not been allowed the same independence.
In observation of Hispanic Heritage month we will be having Dr. Carlos Parra, a post-doctorate researcher in our History Department give a talk on the US-Mexico Border in Nogales during the Mexican Revolution (not to be confused with the war for independance) and pan dulce from La Estrella Bakery.
Come join us!

Your president,
Fernando Valdes

AZ in Israel and Zambia

UA Judaic Studies' Arizona in Israel Program endeavors to apply a scholarly approach, that is, one that prizes objectivity, and thus does not advocate any particular politics or political outcomes with regard to Israel, the Arab-Israeli conflict, or anything else.
An important goal of the program is to introduce students to complex realities in Israel by exposing the students to various Jewish, Arab, Druze, and other views and positions whenever possible. Thus, we hope that students will develop the means to develop informed, analytically sophisticated positions concerning various issues and controversies. In their capacity as the Program's Directors, the AII faculty work neither for/with the Israeli government nor for/with the Palestinian National Authority, nor with/for any other governmental entity; rather, we endeavor to hear from representatives of several such entities, as well as from various civil society groups as well as from scholars and unaffiliated individuals.
